Walking Paths to be Built in Perpericon
Standart Daily, Mina Stefanova, 24.02.2006
Two levs will be the entrance fee to the Thracian historical complex
"The historical complex of Perperikon in Southeastern Bulgaria will be encompassed with hanging paths, as it is provided under the project for a common infrastructure of the complex," said Professor Nikolay Ovcharov, leader of the archeological expedition in the region. "Thus, the tourists will walk at about a meter above the archeological finds, having clear sight on them, without the danger of accidentally damaging one artifact or another," he went on. To his words, the stairs of the complex are already crumbling under the feet of thousands of tourists, coming here each year. Last year, the Perperikon complex received 100,000 visitors. The infrastructure plan also provides the construction of alleys and a museum building with a hall for exhibitions, depositories and dormitories for the archeologists. The infrastructure project should be ready by June and it is expected to cost 250,000 euro, allotted under the Phare program. "We have signed a contract for 1.5 million euro, which we will absorb at several stages," Prof. Ovcharov said. From this year on, the visitors to Perperikon will have to pay two levs entrance fee. Two levs will also be the entrance fee for the Tatul sanctuary. The earthquake, that hit the town of Kurdzhali at the beginning of the week, broke some stone blocks from the hill and they fell into the Perperikon's throne hall and damaged it. The cracks in the high medieval tower have also widened. "These damages are not so fatal," the archeologist says. Over the years the place saw tow long series of earthquake shocks. The first one was in the eight and the seventh century BC and lasted over forty years. The other was in the fourth century AD and lasted thirty years.
